Tags: hide updater background service
Current version on windows minimises to tray.

It would be nice if the there was an option to make it completely hidden. A tray icon is small but it still takes some space. And the tray area usually gets loaded with far too many icons and far too quickly than anyone would want.

I was thinking of something like this:

As long as there is no problem with the updating, it stays hidden. If there is an error then it does the balloon popup thing and the user can advise.

If the user need to change some setting, he just runs the program again. by double-clicking on it or some such. The updater then checks it there is another instance of itself running and calls the config menu of the existing process.

another option would be to run it as a windows service in the background (probably a better one).

so what do you think of this idea?

We actually need this for opendns to be useful on corporate networks. We can't depend on users to not close the updater from the tray: they can just close the icon, reset the office Internet connection and they are out of the network and free to surf blocked sites and compromise the network security.

We need to run this as a service on servers without the need for a user to login for it to update the IP.

I totally agree with this feature, I've got children at home and decided to trust OpenDNS to block porn, ad and phishing sites. I told them not to close the program providing that it's an internet security tool. But I'm sure that they'll be sooner or later tempted to mess around with it. So it would be nice to hide it from them.

Yes, totally agree in regards to a business perspective. We don't want employee's being able to gain access to pages they shouldn't be. If the application can't be seen by the user that would be heaps better.

Alternatively you could put a master password on the application that stops the user from being able to change the application and also close it.
